The hierarchy of national planning policy
starts with the relevant acts of parliament, circulars and statutory
instruments, all of which are now influenced by European legislation
and regulation.
At a lower but very influential
level are Planning Policy Guidance Notes now being systematically
replaced by Planning Policy Statements or, as in the case of PPG21
Tourism, being replaced by a Good Practice Guide.
It is a complex and sometimes
inscrutable maze of legislation but we are familiar with the short
cuts and escape routes and can advise you of the implications as
they impact on your project.
Regional Spatial Strategies are
now gaining in importance. With the Regional Development Agencies
now assuming an increasingly significant role in |

spatial planning it is important not to ignore the Regional Economic
Strategy (RES), the economic reflection of the Regional Spatial
Strategy.
ONE NorthEast were one of the
consultancy’s first clients. Tony worked within their planning
team, liaising with the then Office of the Deputy Prime Minister
(ODPM), now Department for Communities and Local Government, on
behalf of all nine Regional Development Agencies on new legislation
and government initiatives. This experience has given the practice
a considerable insight into the direction of legislation.
